IN-HOME AUTISM THERAPY F.A.Q.
Is ABA therapy or ESDM therapy more suitable for my Autistic child?
The model of therapy recommended for your child depends on your child’s age, his/her areas of strength and need, and your family’s goals.
Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) takes instructor led approach (think elementary school) to help children tackle some of their bigger emotions and build foundational skills required for learning. ABA is recommended for children over the age of 3. Children in the Superminds ABA programs receive between 4 to 18 hours/week of treatment. Click here for more information on ABA.
Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is based on the principles of ABA, but takes a child-led, play-focused, floor time therapeutic approach (think kindergarten), and focuses on skills such as following instructions, imitation and language development. Parents and family members are active participants in ESDM treatment programs. ESDM is recommended for children between 24 to 48 months. Children in the Superminds ESDM program receive 10 hours/week of treatment in 13-week cycles. Click here for more information on ESDM.
ABA and ESDM programs are funded it Ontario to anyone under the age of 18 with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The Superminds ABA and ESDM programs are overseen by a clinical supervisor, who is a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA).

Are speech pathologists involved in the ABA therapy or ESDM therapy programs?
An inter-disciplinary team is what every child needs. When your child enters the Superminds program. your child’s ABA therapists or ESDM therapists collaborate with a speech therapist where there is a need to ensure your child receives maximum support in areas of language and communication development.
Through this model, we have helped countless learners gain independence, be successful in their daycare, classroom, and social environments, and maximize their language and communication potential.
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Many of our students are AAC (LAMP, Touch Chat, Go Talk, Proloquo, or PECS) users. Our clinical supervisors have advanced training to facilitate implementation of both communication systems.
My child has ADD/ADHD, can you help?
If your child has ADD/ADHD or a dual diagnosis of ADD/ADHD and Autism, our programs are specialized to meet your child’s needs.
We have helped countless children with an ADD/ADHD diagnosis learn foundational strategies to become independent learners at school and in daily tasks.

How many hours/week will my child need?
Recommended hours and services. The number of recommended hours will greatly depend on your child’s needs and your family’s goals. After we complete the initial meeting (free of charge), we schedule a consultation appointment where one of our BCBAs® or Senior Therapists will meet your family and your child, further discuss needs and goals, and provide a recommendation of hours and types of services you child would most benefit from.
Minimum 4 hours of direct behaviour therapy per week required. Children entering our programs must receive a minimum of 4 hours of therapy per week for therapy to be effective and show a lasting change.
If financial resources don’t support 4 hours of direct behaviour therapy per week. If families do not have the financial resources to enrol their child into our direct therapy program for at minimum of 4 hours per week, we offer consultative services in the form of parent training.
How do you select who will work with my child?
First, we pair therapists based on your child’s needs with their level of competence and expertise. For example, if your child uses AAC to communicate, we will pair your child with a therapist that is fluent in AAC use and has experience working with AAC users.
Then, we analyze how your child is responding to the assigned therapist. In the perfect world, every child would immediately fall in love with his/her therapist, but in the real world that is not always the case. Sometimes it can even be as simple as the therapist’s hair colour that stands in the way between the child building a relationship with his/her therapist. If the child doesn’t bond with his/her therapist, this can impede his/her learning, so we make sure it’s always a perfect fit.
In addition to the therapists working directly with your child, your child’s team will also have a supervising therapist and a clinical supervisor (Board Certified Behaviour Analysts®; clinical supervisors are only required for ministry-funded services).
